About Alfred Eames Petersen

Vintners Alfred Eames Petersen and his son Devin Eames Petersen have earned a reputation for crafting some of Colorado’s most respected vintages.

Alfred’s journey began in 1964 at the age of 18 when he traveled to the Rioja region of Spain. There, he was introduced to the world of winemaking. Over nine months he learned to select the best grapes, process them, and ferment and age them using methods honed over centuries. Inspired by the old-world traditions of Spain, he spent years experimenting with small batches before establishing the Paonia vineyard and building the winery in 1993. By 1998, the first releases were ready, making him one of the pioneers of Colorado’s North Fork Valley.

Devin Eames Petersen grew up alongside his father, helping with the vineyard and learning the craft firsthand. Today he manages the daily operations, carrying forward the spirit of experimentation and the commitment to quality. In 2025, the family will introduce their newest release, the Petite Syrah.

Eames’s creations are known for balancing fruit and complexity. Layers of flavor reveal themselves in each bottle, from blueberry and black fruit in the merlot/cab blends to black plum and pepper in the Syrah and bright black cherry in the Pinot Noir.

Their approach is deliberate and grounded. Fruit is sourced only from trusted growers with relationships spanning decades. Fermentation is done in open vats with French yeast, and the vintages are aged 18 months in French oak barrels to develop depth, balance and structure.

Every year, the entire production is claimed by those who already know and appreciate the vineyard. Each release reflects the care, patience and passion of a family dedicated to their craft and to the Colorado land that shapes it.
